"The San Francisco Maritime Museum"

"The San Francisco Maritime Museum"

from $80.00

The Maritime Museum is part of the Bathhouse Building, built in 1939 as a joint project of the City of San Francisco and the New Deal Works Progress Administration (WPA).  This unique structure was designed in the Streamline Moderne style, an offshoot of the Art Deco period, and mimics the clean lines of an ocean liner.  After occupation by troops in WWII, the building became home to the San Francisco Maritime Museum and the country’s first Senior Center. A showcase for the artwork of Sargent Johnson and Hilaire Hiler, the museum’s murals have been beautifully restored. The museum is now operated by the National Park Service.
